AEO vs GEO: Different Names for the Same Practice

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are different names for the same practice: making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and mention when they write an answer. They are not two competing methods with separate playbooks.
If you've seen posts framing "AEO vs GEO" like a cage match, this article is the antidote. We'll explain where the names come from, what the shared work looks like, and how to talk about it without confusing your team.
Where the names come from
GEO was popularized by a 2023 academic paper that treated generative answer systems as a new kind of search and tested which content changes improved visibility in generated responses. Agencies and tools picked up the acronym quickly.
AEO emphasizes the product surface people actually use: an answer. "Answer engine" is a plain way to say ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot or Google AI Overviews — systems that return prose (often with citations) instead of only a ranked list of links.
You'll also see AIO, LLM SEO, AI search optimization and similar labels. They overlap heavily. Arguing about the acronym wastes time you could spend fixing a wrong phone number on a directory.
Side-by-side: the work is the same
| Topic | AEO framing | GEO framing |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Be named in the answer | Be named in the generated answer |
| Engines | ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, etc. | Same set of generative engines |
| Core tactics | Crawl access, clear pages, schema, listings, earned mentions, measurement | Same tactics |
| Primary metrics | Appearance rate, citations, AI referrals | Same metrics |
| Relationship to SEO | Overlaps; different interface and measurement | Same relationship |
At AEOswitch we use the AEO label because "answer" matches how customers describe the problem ("ChatGPT didn't recommend us"). We still say "also called GEO" when that helps someone find the right idea. We don't trash other brands that prefer GEO — the practice can coexist under both names.
What is not different
- There is no secret "AEO-only" markup that GEO ignores, or the reverse.
- Google's guidance for AI features still starts with normal Search eligibility (no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible).
- Buying fake reviews or spammy placements doesn't become ethical because you renamed the project AEO.
How to choose a label for your team
- Pick one primary term so docs and tickets stay searchable.
- Define the deliverables in plain language: question set, engine list, baseline table, fix list, monthly re-run.
- Define the metrics: share of answers that name you; share that cite your URL; wrong-fact rate; referral sessions from AI domains.
- Keep a synonym note: "AEO = GEO = optimizing for AI answers."
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO and GEO are different names for the same practice: getting named, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers. The day-to-day work — clear pages, consistent listings, earned mentions and repeated measurement — does not change with the acronym.
Should I hire separate AEO and GEO vendors?
No. Hiring two firms for the same work doubles cost and creates conflicting recommendations. Hire for the deliverables and measurement, not for the buzzword on the homepage.
Is GEO more "scientific" because of the paper?
The 2023 GEO paper is useful context, not a franchise. AEO teams who cite real sources and measure carefully are doing the same kind of work. Judge partners by methods and honesty, not by which three letters they trademarked.
