What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)? A Plain-English Guide

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and mention when they answer someone's question. The "answer engines" are tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews, which write an answer instead of handing you a list of links.

That's the short version. The rest of this guide explains how these engines decide what to say, what actually helps, how AEO relates to GEO and SEO, and how to tell whether it's working. If you want the name debate first, jump to AEO vs GEO.

Why people talk about answer engines now

More buyers ask an assistant before they call a business. The assistant returns a short answer with a handful of names — not a page of ten blue links. If your name isn't in that paragraph, you lost the impression before the customer ever reached a website.

Those answers also move around. One study of ChatGPT local recommendations asked the same question twice, a few days apart, and found that only about 48% of the businesses named the first time were named again. A single screenshot is not a strategy. Repeated checks are.

How answer engines decide what to say

Details differ between products, but the pattern for real-world "who should I hire" questions usually looks like this:

  1. The engine works out what's being asked. It may break a question into smaller searches.
  2. It retrieves sources from the web (or a partner index). Pages that can't be crawled never make it into the pile.
  3. It reads and writes. The model writes an answer, often citing some of the retrieved pages.

For current, local or commercial questions, live retrieval does most of the work. That means the current state of the web — which you can influence — matters a lot.

What actually helps with answer engine optimization

Strip away the jargon and most AEO work falls into five buckets.

1. Be reachable

If an engine's crawler can't load your pages, nothing else matters. Check robots.txt and security or CDN settings. Documented bots include OpenAI's crawlers, PerplexityBot, Anthropic's Claude bots and Google's crawlers. You can often allow search crawlers while blocking training crawlers if you prefer; they're separate.

For Google's AI Overviews specifically, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, with no additional requirements.

2. Be clear

Engines quote passages that answer a question cleanly. Good AEO writing looks like good writing for busy people:

  • Answer the main question in the first two sentences
  • One topic per page, with descriptive headings
  • Specific facts: places served, process, timelines, credentials
  • Short, honest FAQs taken from real customer questions

3. Be consistent

Your name, phone, hours, service area and description should match everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, directories and social profiles. Conflicting information makes you harder to recommend with confidence.

4. Be mentioned

Look at which sources the engines cite for questions in your field. You'll see reviews, trade directories, local news, comparison articles and community discussions. Earning honest mentions there is often the slowest part of AEO — and often the part that matters most.

5. Be measured

Pick a fixed set of customer questions. Ask them on each engine several times a month. Track appearance rate, citation rate, fact accuracy and referral traffic from AI domains. Trends beat anecdotes.

Where the research comes from

The related term "generative engine optimization" was popularized by a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, which tested which page changes made content more likely to show up in generated answers. Their experiments found some content changes improved visibility by up to 40% in their tests. The field is still young; treat any single study as a starting point, not a guarantee.

How AEO relates to SEO

AEO overlaps heavily with good SEO. Crawlable pages, clear structure, trustworthy reputation and useful content help both. The main differences are the interface (an answer instead of a list), the writing style (answer first), the outside mentions that engines lean on, and the metric (named/cited rate instead of only classic rankings).

Is AEO only for big brands?

No. Local and mid-sized businesses often have a clearer path into location-specific answers than national brands do for every city. Thin or inconsistent local information is usually the blocker, not company size.

Do I need a separate AEO agency if I already have SEO?

Not always. If your SEO partner already writes answer-first pages, fixes listings, watches AI referrals and re-checks mentions, they may already be doing AEO under another name. What matters is the work — not the label on the invoice.
